>and your isp probably offers some amount of free web space with your account

I missed commenting on this... SBC Yahoo does give you a good amount of space, but doesn't advertise that this is only album / briefcase space that won't give a permanent URL to each file (the URL contains some cookie bullshit that changes) just so you can't build an actual website in the space.

I've used http://godaddy.com and thought they were cheap, but http://1and1.com is now offering .info domains for FREE and others for good prices. Domains are definitely the easy part these days, and so cheap that you can buy several. A domain is useful even if you don't do anything more with it than point it at your Yahoo space.

Hosting companies often have wizards you can use to create a simple web site. I haven't used any of these... oh, I did use the Geocities one once.

http://www.ornj.net/software/webalbum/ is another very easy to use album generator for Windows. I've also used several Unix album generators.

http://soakland.info is hosted from my house via dynamic DNS. This costs nothing if you have a computer that can stay on all the time. (Apache server software is free even for Windows) Hosting is affordable enough though. Cat is a good person to ask about cheap hosting as she does huge Flash and PowerPoint files and has shopped for lowest priced hosting recently.

Cat won't do any HTML without Dreamweaver and always advises people who ask for website advice to just start playing with Dreamweaver. I'm the opposite and tend to write terse HTML manually in a low-tech text editor, or for repetitive stuff write my own programs to generate HTML, winding up with a look like http://soakland.info , perhaps not the best model if you are hoping for charm.

Yes! I'm totally all over that, m'girl!

Undecided on domain names, but I've got a few tossing around in the old noggin.

I trust I shall see you later! I've decided to do Michelle's, Cracklandia, then Michelle's again if it works that way. I'm excited at the prospect that I may be in the passenger seat tonight (but who knows).

ali, you do need a website for sure because yahoo photos has no ali charm. if you can't find someone to do it you can make a simple one yourself easily if you have photoshop. photoshop has a really easy function for making photo gallery pages, and then you just need some basic html to do a home/index page (i have books you can borrow). that's how i did my site (http://www.pyrokitten.com), though it is badly in need of updating with the 2000+ pics i've taken that aren't up yet. but that's because i'm lame, not because it's hard to do.

you should get a domain too. aliinyourface.com is available, and you can register for cheap at godaddy.com. the last step is getting web hosting, and apparently laughing squid has good deals, and your isp probably offers some amount of free web space with your account.

maybe you can come over some time and we can have a website building session where we both work on our sites, since i need some encouragement in this area! i don't have a laptop though so i have to do it at my house.

Oh well, I guess no ass action forthcoming for now.

>Mostly photojournal, gallery, blog delights, community events & projects.

Blogging is so well done by the major blogging sites, that it seems like a waste of effort to try to duplicate it yourself. You might want to look at them and see if they meet your needs. Some are very customizable.

Here are a couple of blogs by people I know on Tribe that I can think of off the top of my head:
http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=jennconspiracy
http://www.livejournal.com/users/boot_slut/
Probably other members can provide more examples. Those two are personal blogs; there are also a lot of subject-oriented sites that use a blog format.
http://www.languagehat.com/
http://slashdot.com/

There are also tribes about blogging that have a huge membership:
http://bloggers.tribe.net
http://lj.tribe.net

Photojournal can be done just by putting photos in your blog, though there are sites like Fotolog that are blogs especially focused on lots of pics and not much text.

You're doing gallery already, not sure how dissatisfied you are with the Yahoo Photos look/feel.

Event schedule is the area where I'm least confident that available existing software has it down already. Still, it's worth looking at readily available stuff like Yahoo Calendar http://calendar.yahoo.com which you can use with your existing Yahoo account, your URL would be http://calendar.yahoo.com/aliinyourface once you activate your calendar.

Plant Trees was looking for better software for his voluminous events listing http://planttrees.org/events.php but couldn't give him anything much better. Not sure if the current version has major changes or not since we talked. Ironically, he's the only one who rejected an invite to this tribe, saying he only does tribes with serious content.
